Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Unsure of quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I could pass the evening somewhere that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed lost because a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I shared my situation and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest for the evening.
Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I operated under a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – but still very grateful.
I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I lost touch with her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish life has repaid her generosity tenfold. We could all use more people like that woman.
