Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team But McCarthy Left Out

Rugby squad announcement update

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash also miss out because of injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, the team will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected as Farrell deciding not to selecting the province's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in a couple of Leinster's three league games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
