The eagerly awaited semi-final between England and the South African team in the Women’s Cricket World Cup is underway at the Guwahati stadium. England clinched the toss and opted to bowl, aiming to put pressure on the South African batting lineup.
NSB took over the bowling in place of Bell. No boundaries were given away, thanks to quick work in the field from Beaumont near the rope.
The South African opener, looking in great touch, struck two consecutive fours off Smith. A full toss was dispatched through long off, followed by another poor delivery through the covers.
A brief mix-up almost resulted in Brits her wicket, but the throw from Nat Sciver-Brunt missed the stumps. She then responded with a powerful shot a wide delivery past cover to the boundary. Lauren Bell ended the over with a well-pitched ball which rose over Brits' bat.
Linsey Smith delivered a controlled over. Even with the previous opportunity, reports indicate the English team are the best fielding side in the tournament.
A half-chance went begging. Brits struck fiercely a delivery toward Lauren Bell, which flew for four runs.
Overcast conditions hovered over the venue, and the floodlights in use. Smith seemed in better rhythm compared to earlier games yet served up a loose delivery that Wolvaardt punished to the off-side boundary for a boundary.
Bell opened the bowling with the new ball. Wolvaardt immediately took advantage, driving the initial delivery elegantly past cover for a boundary. Another wide delivery was cut for another boundary. Bell then tightened her line, allowing just one run from a wide.
The pitch reportedly differs from the one used in the earlier match. It is described as a surface with red soil, promising extra bounce and assistance for the seamers.
Both teams have had mixed performances in the competition so far. The English team are considered favourites, however the Proteas have the potential to cause an upset. History shows that England have emerged victorious in both previous semi-final meetings when these teams met.
“Brace yourselves, things are about to get intense.” The pressure is on as both teams aim for a spot in the championship match.
Stay tuned for further developments as the match progresses.
