Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as governor concludes in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any decision is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to cut taxpayer dollars from California and suggested revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, after a this week's deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration retorted in a last month's statement countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
