The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested as part of a broad FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
