Liverpool's head coach has revealed that the team leadership agree with his assessment regarding the recent downturn and he refuses to compromise their forward-thinking philosophy in search of a solution. The manager conceded that six defeats in seven matches was below standard ahead of the weekend fixture with Villa.
The manager acknowledged the pressure was on before his makeshift team were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace. However, he insisted that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the team's proprietors or football administration following a significant spending of nearly £450 million.
"Our views align," commented the Liverpool boss, whose team next week face the Spanish giants in the continental tournament and travel to the Citizens in the Premier League.
Slot believes his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are fully healthy and completely set for the schedule ahead". He mentioned that the transfer window acquisitions in talents including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who is expected to be sidelined again against the Birmingham club through fitness issues, had left the club "in a strong situation for the immediate prospects and the long-term future".
When asked why his team were having difficulty blending, he replied: "That's not particularly helpful. 'Why, why, why?' I give an explanation and people say I'm offering alibis. I can come up with five or six reasons why we are underperforming or suffering defeats as we do but, as I consistently state, there are insufficient justifications to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only the Lancashire club (twenty-one) have allowed more significant openings from normal situations this season than Slot's team (19). The table-toppers, Arsenal, have faced two. Yet Slot denies the champions have been too open and claims there is no basis to compromise forward-thinking approach for a cautious system after ten fixtures without a shutout.
"In my view we're not allowing many opportunities so I don't see a reason to modify our philosophy totally but we need to do better in preventing goals," he stated.
"Versus the Red Devils, how many opportunities did we allow? When playing Frankfurt when we were leading 3-1, we hardly conceded a effort at our net. In each fixture we played until now we haven't allowed a many opportunities. Definitely not. We do allow a bit more than the previous campaign but that has to do with us being 1-0 down so you become more adventurous. But typically I don't believe that our challenge is that we allow too many opportunities. Our challenge is we are unable to finish the openings we produce."
