Nearly 25,000 Lost Electricity in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Nearly 25,000 households in south-east Queensland were left without power on Monday morning after intense storm systems passed over the state, bringing wind gusts hitting 109km/h.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Broad Damage

Residents reported substantial frozen pellets as large as 7cm in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that different parts across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing power throughout the damaged zones, with dozens of response units deployed to address the widespread outages.

Victorian Weather Woes

Simultaneously, approximately one thousand energy customers in Victoria also faced energy failures after the capital city recorded its heaviest rainfall in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services responded to nearly 600 requests for assistance across the area, primarily for building damage but also for fallen timber and water accumulation.

• Hoppers Crossing suburb - various rescue reports
• Wyndham - nearly 180 help reports

At one point on Sunday, more than 28k power users in the state were without power.

Climate Outlook

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along significant areas of eastern Queensland this week as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

Tomorrow was expected to become the most rainy day, with persistent severe weather risk expected across multiple regions of both areas.

Safety Concern

Medical authorities cautioned that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, especially given the current weather patterns.
