Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Energy Deliveries to the Indian Nation in Rebuff of Washington Pressure

In a clear statement to the United States, President Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “unbroken” supplies of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and affirmed their partnership were “resilient to external pressure.”

A Statement For the Western Countries

The statement, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at western countries, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its historical links with Moscow. This comes follows earlier Washington's moves, notably the imposition of trade penalties targeting New Delhi over its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy source of energy resources and anything required for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president stated. “Moscow stands willing to persist in ensuring the consistent delivery of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not mentioning oil explicitly, echoed the theme by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and vital pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Challenging US Interference

In the lead-up to the summit, in a TV appearance, Putin had challenged US interference on India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “When Washington is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India have the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival was his initial visit to India following the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a deliberate effort to display that the bond between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Warm Greeting

In a rare step, the Indian PM met Putin as he disembarked. They shared a warm hug as old friends before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.

Modi referred to India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and noted it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Cooperation

The bilateral summit resulted in a number of important deals across military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an strategic roadmap aimed at 2030, which aims to double commerce to $100bn annually by the target year.

Furthermore vowed to restructure their military partnership. Although Russia is still India's primary source of arms, this role has declined over the past decade as India has sought broaden its sources.

Their communique stressed cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge military systems, though specific details of purchases such as the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Ultimately, both nations reiterated that during the “present intricate, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be strong to external pressure.”
