The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
