The bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezing appliances in an apartment in western Austria.
The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for a number of months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the Innsbruck area.
Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the female victim, told authorities last week that there had been an incident—but rejected intentional killing.
Informing the media recently, a official for the legal authorities said the two suspects were being held on "high likelihood of intentional killing".
Personal details of those implicated have not been released by law enforcement, in accordance with Austrian law.
The family's disappearance was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Police said the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her daughter to visit her parents in Turkey.
The victim's bank card was then noted as being active abroad on multiple occasions.
Yet when investigators searched the woman's home, her cellphone was found.
A witness also reported listening to a disturbing sound in the apartment, and shouts of "mother" on the date the pair were believed to have vanished.
A broader police investigation was started, with investigators uncovering various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—such as a notice of quitting to her company and texts to the male associate.
Authorities confirmed a significant cash transfer was also transferred to the suspect.
The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed media representatives on that day that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezer had been placed there.
The brothers took out the freezer from the unit on the date the victims vanished, Tersch stated. And a week later, they obtained an additional appliance.
Officials believe they consider this points to the fatalities were intentionally orchestrated.
"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official stated.
The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the specific order of occurrences is not yet known, but the victims were carefully placed and not discovered during a previous house search.
While the suspects were detained in June, it was not until November 12 that the elder brother confessed to an incident and to concealing the remains. He denies any plan to cause death, investigators said.
At the same time, his younger brother acknowledged a cover-up but rejected awareness of a homicide.
The pair are at this time in detention before court proceedings in jails in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.
In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister said the "suspected killing of two... represents the sudden and brutal end of two human lives and reveals a brutal scheme".
"Female individuals are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they added.
"Gender-based killings are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must fight resolutely."
