AI-generated graphics purporting to portray Nicolás Maduro detained after his capture by the US have gained tens of millions of impressions online.
The first inauthentic AI image apparently showing him being escorted off a plane circulated shortly after. This image was unpublished by any official American sources; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.
Additional synthetic images were disseminated in the following hours, seemingly depicting different views of Maduro in custody. Discernible watermarks on these pictures indicate they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates all of these images were also created or altered Google AI.
The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following this real photo was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were modified to include the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics show these updated fakes were first posted on the video platform by a digital art profile. Again, SynthID says the new graphics were produced with AI tools.
