US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities

As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Strikes

The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.

Only on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Defends Tactics Amid Pressure

The government has faced growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.

While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
