What's Inside the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison built from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.
